Death by Scrabble

Vimeo: Death by Scrabble from Luke Davies
Death By Scrabble is an insight into the mind of a disgruntled young husband, forced into a mind numbing game of scrabble with his wife. As the game progresses, our protagonist’s thoughts grow more sinister by the second. Un-amused and unpredictable, Fredrick Scheike is more than just misogynistic, and perhaps it is this that blinds him to what is really going on.

Wikipedia: Star 69 / Weapon of Choice
"Star 69" and "Weapon of Choice" are two songs by English big beat musician Fatboy Slim, released as a double A-side single from his third studio album, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars.

Music video
The song is perhaps best known for its accompanying music video, which was filmed in the lobby of the Marriott Hotel (now the LA Hotel) in Los Angeles in December 2000. Directed by Spike Jonze and featuring actor Christopher Walken, who trained as a dancer in musical theatre before his acting career, it features Walken dancing and flying around in the empty hotel to the music.

The "Weapon of Choice" video won six awards at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards. Walken was awarded one of MTV's "Moonmen" for Best Choreography. The clip was also ranked number one in a list of the top 100 videos of all time by VH1 in April 2002 that was compiled from a music industry survey. The Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt has also danced in a version of the music video that was directed by Malik Bendjelloul. In 2012, British comedian and presenter Rowland Rivron also won charity TV show Let's Dance for Sport Relief with his reenactment of the video's choreography.

Only in America can you be pro-death penalty, pro-war, pro-unmanned drone bombs, pro-nuclear weapons, pro-guns, pro-torture, pro-land mines and still call yourself "pro-life". -John Fugelsang

Hieronymus Bosch: The Garden of Earthly Delights

Wikipedia: The Garden of Earthly Delights
The Garden of Earthly Delights is the modern title given to a triptych painted by the Early Netherlandish master Hieronymus Bosch. It has been housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid since 1939. Dating from between 1490 and 1510, when Bosch was between about 40 and 60 years old, it is his best-known and most ambitious complete work.

The triptych is painted in oil on oak and is formed from a square middle panel flanked by two other oak rectangular wings that close over the center as shutters. The outer wings, when folded, show a grisaille painting of the earth during the biblical narrative of Creation. The three scenes of the inner triptych are probably (but not necessarily) intended to be read chronologically from left to right. The left panel depicts God presenting Eve to Adam, the central panel is a broad panorama of socially engaged nude figures, fantastical animals, oversized fruit and hybrid stone formations. The right panel is a hellscape and portrays the torments of damnation.

Wikipedia: Hieronymus Bosch
Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516) was an Early Netherlandish painter. His work is known for its use of fantastic imagery to illustrate moral and religious concepts and narratives.

Personal Notes
For some inexplicable reason, as a child, I developed a strong interest in reading. My parents had an eclectic home library and this inquisitive child delved into literature, art, and even medicine. (my father was a medical professional) There were several large picture books giving an overview of the art world, from the ancient to the modern masters, and I had an introduction to the wonderful world of art, both scuplture and painting.

I saw The Garden of Earthly Delights and was quite enamoured by both the detail and the imagery. Like many a teenager, I followed rock music faithfully and when the following 1969 album by Deep Purple came out, I was the only one among my friends who immediately recognised the painting on the cover.

Deep Purple: album #3 (1969)

Wikipedia: Deep Purple (album)
Deep Purple, also referred to as Deep Purple III, is the third studio album by English rock band Deep Purple, released in 1969 on Harvest Records in the UK and on Tetragrammaton in the US.

Album Cover
Tetragrammaton issued the album in a stark gatefold sleeve, wrapped around with a segmented illustration from Hieronymus Bosch's painting "The Garden of Earthly Delights. The label ran into difficulty over the use of the Museo del Prado-owned painting, which was incorrectly perceived as being anti-religious; featuring "immoral scenes", in the US and thus rejected or poorly stocked by many record shops. The original painting is in colour although it appeared on the LP in monochrome due to a printing error for the original layout and the band opted to keep it that way.

Charli XCX: Boom Clap

Boom boom boom clap

You're picture perfect blue
Sunbathing on the moon
Stars shining as your bones illuminate
First kiss just like a drug
Under your influence
You take me over you're the magic in my veins
This must be love

Boom clap
The sound of my heart
The beat goes on and on and on and on and
Boom clap
You make me feel good
Come on to me come on to me now
Boom clap
The sound of my heart
The beat goes on and on and on and on and
Boom clap
You make me feel good
Come on to me come on to me now

No silver or no gold
Could dress me up so good
You're the glitter in the darkness of my world
Just tell me what to do
I'll fall right into you
Going under cast a spell just say the word
I feel your love

Boom clap
The sound of my heart
The beat goes on and on and on and on and
Boom clap
You make me feel good
Come on to me come on to me now
Boom clap
The sound of my heart
The beat goes on and on and on and on and
Boom clap
You make me feel good
Come on to me come on to me now

You are the light and I will follow
You let me lose my shadow
You are the sun the glowing halo
And you keep burning me up with all of your love

Boom clap
The sound of my heart
The beat goes on and on and on and on and
Boom clap
You make me feel good
Come on to me come on to me now
Boom clap
The sound of my heart

Cats Watching You Have Sex

Ah, the Internet is a vast fun-filled place. For example, take a picture of a cat, add an amusing caption following the above premise, and voilà, let the chuckles ensue.

Starting in January 2011, some unknown comedian started a Tumblr web site called "Cats Watching You Have Sex". I thought the premise was original and I had a number of good chuckles. Even a few guffaws. Here's a sampling of this person's fine comedic work and I hope I'll persuade you to clink on over to further delve into the wonderful world of our furry felines bearing witness to our most private of moments.

For Real
A search on Google for "Cats Watching You Have Sex" turns a number of serious or tongue-in-cheek write-ups.

Is It Weird When Pets Watch You Have Sex? by Kat George
I used to date a guy who had a beautiful gray cat, and as a cat mommy myself, it pleased me to no end that I’d found a cat daddy to copulate with. That was until, mid-coitus, I found myself face to face with said pussy. As I eyeballed the cat that was sitting on the bed, mere inches from my face, staring me down while his daddy pounded me, I started to feel strangely uneasy.

“How to Kiss” from LIFE Magazine, 1942

References

Despite my best efforts, I couldn't find the original article. Everybody has reproduced the pictures, but not whatever text may have accompanied them. Why, in 1942 during World War II, did somebody think this was a topic worth publishing? Maybe this was a "how to" guide for the famous 1945 kiss in Times Square below.

Wikipedia: Life (magazine)
LIFE was an American magazine that ran weekly from 1883 to 1972, published initially as a humor and general interest magazine. Time founder Henry Luce bought the magazine in 1936, solely so that he could acquire the rights to its name, and shifted it to a role as a weekly news magazine with a strong emphasis on photojournalism. LIFE was published weekly until 1972, as an intermittent "special" until 1978, and as a monthly from 1978 to 2002.

Perhaps one of the best-known pictures printed in the magazine was Alfred Eisenstaedt’s photograph of a nurse in a sailor’s arms, snapped on August 27, 1945, as they celebrated VJ Day in New York City. The magazine's role in the history of photojournalism is considered its most important contribution to publishing. LIFE was wildly successful for two generations before its prestige was diminished by economics and changing tastes.

Wikipedia: V-J Day in Times Square
V-J Day in Times Square is a photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt that portrays an American sailor kissing a woman in a white dress on Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) in Times Square in New York City, on August 14, 1945.
